Science Communicator

Board member & Course Instructor of UW Engage Science Communication Program Engage is a hands-on science communication seminar for graduate students that trains students in improv, storytelling, and public speaking. In collaboration with Town Hall Seattle students give public talks (link to my 2018 talk), present short pitches, and practice science writing with a blog post. After taking the Engage course in 2018, I was the primary instructor in 2019, and am now a board member and advisory instructor. In addition to the course, I work with Engage to give workshops on science communication best practices and navigating difficult situations in public science communication.

Outreach Coordinator at Neuroscience Community Outreach Group (2016-2019) As the outreach coordinator for NCOG, I recruited volunteers for school visits, helped organize the annual brain awareness week event with over 700 area students visiting UW campus for hands-on neuroscience activities, coordinated with science fairs to recruit judges, and helped organize exhibitors for the Pacific Science Center. In addition to my job coordinating our volunteer activities, I led lessons in classrooms K-8 throughout graduate school and regularly presented hands-on activities at research fairs and the Pacific Science Center.

Teaching Assistant and Laboratory Instructor for Neurobiology 301 Undergraduate Course I was the lead instructor for hands-on neurophysiology lab sessions teaching extracellular cockroach recordings, intracellular leech recordings, and circuits using ohm’s law. I led students through writing four graduate-level lab reports, teaching science writing, scientific method, figure making, and basic hypothesis testing and descriptive statistics. I also got experience in standard TA responsibilities including: office hours, test review sessions, and grading

Science Teacher (6th – 8th) at Center City Public Charter Schools As the sole science teacher at CCPCS Trinidad, I taught three separate curricula to three grade bands, developing Next Gen Science Standards’ aligned lesson plans, including weekly hands-on labs for Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. I adapted curriculum for students with Individualized Educations Plans and English Language Learners, all while gaining skills in classroom management, rubric development, and pedagogy.

Tutor From 2012 – 2015, I tutored independently, for Ashley Tutors, and for the Latino Student Fund. My students ranged from 2nd grade through college biology students.
